The 11th Hour
I don’t know whether this video influenced me more as a industrial designer or as human being, I think it’s latter.
The most important thing that this video has taught me is that we as human beings are stupid, young and selfish creature who will stop at nothing for their own personal gain. Today we see “our only home (earth)” in a dying state with global warming and natural disaster, and who is there to blame but ourselves, we are selfishly killing mother earth just by the simple things we do in our daily lives (driving, watching TV, listening to iPods and using kitchen appliances) and also by voting for destruction by becoming a willing participants in buying corporate products.

As I watch the video my first reaction is from how graphic the opening scenes in depicting the problems that we are creating by abusing and neglecting the environment.
Society needs to understand the importance it is in keeping the balance between nature and human society, and today the balance is shifted greatly towards society, we neglect the environment by de-forestation, over fishing and pollution. Kenny Ausubel –“Relationships between the 2 most complicated system on earth, human society and nature.”
So we need to change! Why haven’t we changed? What’s stopping us from Changing?
Reverend James Parks Morton tells us why “Our attitudes are base on selfishness, based on economy and based on politics that we have.” Money, politics and greed once again stops all the nations to stop what they are doing and reduce their carbon footprints.
Another reason why we are not doing enough to change our stance is the corporate industry. High CEO in the industry and politician stands to lose a lot of money and power in the transition period to save the world, they believe that the economy will suffer which in turn hurt society. Bul****
Kenny Ausubel- “The greatest Weapon of Mass Destruction is corporate economic globalisation”
We us designers is a major player in damaging the environments. We designed products that have poor recyclability, expensive materials, and expensive and high resource manufacturing process. Bruce Mau- “Our objective today is the welfare of life.” After watching this we need to start thinking differently, design differently and do things differently, we need to start thinking of the environment every time we design.
Ray Anderson-“In nature, one organism’s waste is another organism’s food” “Waste Free Industrial System” Like I mention before we as a designer needs to go from the cradle to grave concepts to cradle to cradle concepts, we need to look into more environmentally friendly materials, manufacturing process and design sustainability.

Survival Fire
Zippo has designed a new Emergency Fire Starter Kit, pretty handy if your in need of a fire especially after a natural disaster. The kit includes rayon-made water-resistant waxed tinder sticks to quickly and easily light a fire, i found this product interesting because fire could be used to save or survive during or after a disaster..

other Design in Charade
Here are some of the other product that the group has designed that i find interesting during the Monday chair charades. I think all group presented and design a wonderful solution to the innovation challenge that Mar has prepared for us.
UNDERWORLD
UNDERWORLD
This is one design by the other Group I think it's called underworld, probably referring to the children imagination into another world as they play beneath tables or chairs. An interesting design of using the frame of the chair as poles to stick children's soft toys, this product is obviously satisfying the social and psychological pleasure of the fond memories that the parents will have as their child grows up and reminisce about their children's.
LAZY BUM
What a name, Interesting design of adding laminated plywood to the top and the bottom legs of the chair to add another function as a rocking chair. A wonderful idea aiming the product to the new mothers market so they will be able to change the dining table to a rocking chair while they hold their babies, this can also aimed at the elderly market.
This is another unique design (I forgot the name), wonderful idea of adding a secret compartment under the chair for extra storage or to give children their own secret compartment. I believed its aimed at students market with its own personalised name plate behind the chair to custom the chair or make the product more individual. Adding simple thing such us a padding can be great making the chair more comfortable and more ergonomic during long usage.

Charade- Stable our Group design
This is the final design that my group has come up with for the final charade challenge, it is called the Stable and it’s an attachment product that is attached to the leg of the chair by screws and rotational hinge to allow a small tea table to slide out of the base of the chair.
This proposed design solution that we have come up with will increase the social, Physical and psychological pleasure of the Stefan Ikea chair as a product and increase the emotional attachment the user have on this chair. The design is physically pleasurable as it takes out the need to use table to place your dinner or drinks while watching TV or relaxing, it is convenience and simple to use all the user have to do is attached the product and slide the table in and out when needed.
It also adds social and psychological pleasure into the chair as it can be used as a conversation starter in social gathering with friends or family, it is unique and it gets the user and others involve in the product by sliding out while it gives the sense of magic or technological simplicity.
As a group we really haven’t discussed well into the material of the product as we were in a rush in completing the mock up and the story board, but personally I believe that the product can be made out of the same timber and finishes of the chair which is Pine and painted matte black.
This will ensure that the Stable blends in the chair without it standing out or to differentiate from the chair. Treated pine is easily source and available and cheap to manufacture, it is relatively strong to compare to its weight ratio.
The consumer can use this product for a variety of ways, the user can use it as a small TV dining table where they can slide the table out during dinner and place drinks and plate on the table while consuming food and after usage the customer can slide the stable back in. Another situation is that it can be use during a social gathering to place coffee or tea cup or a sports fan watching sports can put beer, remote or even score boards on the stable to record the match. This in turns creates memories which can increase the emotional attachment of the user.
A stimuli in which encourage the used to buy this attachment can be moving of houses where the user moves or downsize or students moving out into a small apartment or house which has limited space for tables or limit movement of furniture. During this situation the Stable will come in handy as it saves space and time.

Objectified Reflection
OBJECTIFIED
“From the moment they wake up, almost everything that fills their world has been designed”
Society often takes product and their designer for granted, especially everyday product that we use and see throughout our everyday life, the example that was given in the vid was the posted note. We know is there but we don’t appreciate how much time and effort taken to design it.
Also these products that we took for granted all tells a different story from the designers background and the products culture, “Every object tells a story” the video shows us how a simple product such as a toothpick can contain so many tradition and cultural background of the product or its designer.
This video remind us as a society how important these everyday product in influencing and shaping our lifestyle “every object, intentional or not, speak for who put it there”. We as human surround our self with objects that reflects our lifestyle and our personal life to society, most products we buy or use has become an accessories to be used in our life to match our style of living. For example Mobile phone was first design to communicate with one of another, however today phones or any other products are designed to reflect an idea or “emotional energy” (Chris Dangle).
Rob Walker “Good design is something that Distinguish you” Today we use design to distinguish our self from society we use products to differentiate our self from people that we surround us. They give us uniqueness and the feeling of individuality which differentiate ourselves from others.
(Dieter Rams) “Good design should always be innovative, useful, understandable, honest, consistent in detail, Long lived and environmentally friendly”. The video has made me realise the importance of design sustainability in the design process of any product today, as we learn from the Myeco footprint quiz we took last week that the earth is suffering at the hands of society.
“ most of what you design will end up in the landfill” ( Tim Barn )As a designer we must shift our focus from the “ Cradle to Cradle concept” to “ Cradle to Grave concept” as our earth reach its peak designers must focus their design from the manufacturing process to its disposable. As the future of designers we as a student now must understand the importance of using environmentally friendly materials, recyclable material, non toxic etc in order to help our struggling earth back to its feet while maintaining a constant supply of product to meet society needs and wants.
